Blur the background of a photo

Portrait-mode depth, added after the shot.

Pixa estimates the depth of the scene, keeps the subject crisp and blurs what lies behind it progressively, the way a wide-aperture lens would, so busy streets and cluttered rooms stop competing for attention.

How it works

  1. Upload the photo

Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC file up to 25 MB. Portraits, pets and products give the most striking results.

  2. Set the blur

Drag the strength slider from a subtle f/4 look to a creamy f/1.4 look, and move the focus point if the subject is not where Pixa guessed.

  3. Download

Save the result as JPG, PNG or WebP, at full resolution.

Why use it

  • Depth-aware, no halo

Blur grows with distance, so the ground near the subject stays sharper than the far background, just as a real lens renders it.

  • Hide what you can’t crop

Soften a messy room, passers-by or a sign in the background without losing the framing you chose.

  • Made for phone photos

Small phone sensors keep almost everything in focus. Pixa gives you the subject separation they can’t.

Questions and answers

How is this different from portrait mode on my phone?

Portrait mode has to be chosen before you shoot. Pixa adds the effect afterwards, to any photo, including old pictures and shots taken in the regular camera mode.

Can I keep part of the background sharp?

Yes. Move the focus point, or paint over the areas to keep sharp, such as a second person or a product held in a hand.

Will hair edges look natural?

Yes. The subject mask follows strands and flyaways, and the blur fades softly at the edge instead of cutting a hard line.

Can I blur a face or a license plate for privacy?

Yes. Paint over it with the privacy brush, which applies a strong blur to that area only, whatever its depth in the scene.
